“Our First Chapter” is Riwaq Magazine’s debut issue, dedicated to feaIssue 01 turing the artists who shape Oman’s creative landscape today. This first chapter brings together diverse voices, perspectives, and visual expressions—highlighting the talents, stories, and artistic journeys that define our growing community. Through curated features and honest documentation, we open our magazine with a celebration of the creators who inspire the chapters yet to come.
What is Riwaq?
Riwaq Magazine is a platform dedicated to documenting Omani creativity and modern visual culture. Our mission is to provide a space where the artistic voices of Oman can be seen, celebrated, and shared with the world. Through photography, visual arts, and storytelling, Riwaq highlights the richness of Oman’s contemporary art scene while capturing the spirit of its streets, communities, and traditions.
We will be featuring three main segments: Riwaq Spotlight, which highlights artists and creative individuals; and Riwaq Documentation, which covers galleries, creative spaces, places of cultural significance, and the stories that shape Oman’s visual landscape.
Why “Riwaq”?
The name “Riwaq” reflects meaning, cultural depth, and architectural and artistic symbolism. Just like the architectural riwaqs that connect spaces in traditional Omani buildings, this magazine serves as a connecting platform for artists, audiences, and the creative community bridging stories, images, and inspiration across the Sultanate.
Founder’s Note
Riwaq was created by Mohammed Bader Almaskari, an Omani documentary and street photographer passionate about visual storytelling. Through years of capturing the streets, people, and hidden moments of Oman, Mohamed dreamed of a platform where emerging and established artists could share their work and narratives. Riwaq is his effort to build a bridge between the artists, their audiences, and the wider world, reflecting the beauty, diversity, and creativity of Oman.
