Meet Sarah Farid Al Aulaqi

Sarah Farid Al-Aulaqi is a multidisciplinary artist from the Sultanate of Oman whose work resonates across local, regional, and international art scenes. Her practice has been exhibited widely in Oman, including major galleries and cultural spaces, while also reaching audiences throughout the Gulf, the Middle East, and beyond. The distinctiveness of her work lies in its ability to merge heritage with contemporary processes, creating meaningful dialogues between past and present.

I am a multidisciplinary artist from the Sultanate of Oman. I was born in the UK and raised in Muscat, a place that shaped my sensitivity to history, land, and cultural memory from an early age. My practice grew naturally from a curiosity about how people live, dress, eat, and pass stories from one generation to the next. Art, for me, was never separate from life it became a way to observe, preserve, and question what might otherwise disappear.

I began my journey working intuitively with photography, textiles, and everyday objects. Over time, my work evolved into mixed media and installation, allowing me to translate personal and collective histories into tangible forms. I am deeply inspired by heritage—both tangible and intangible particularly traditional garments, embroidery, food rituals, and handcrafted objects. These elements carry silent stories of labor, resilience, and care. I am drawn to what lies beneath the surface: the inner stitches rather than the polished exterior, the unseen emotions behind beauty, and the quiet strength that often goes unnoticed.

My work often merges traditional materials with contemporary processes, creating a dialogue between past and present. I am interested in how memory can be re-activated through material—how fabric, thread, photographs, or even food can function as an archive. Much of my practice reflects on identity, womanhood, and belonging, using symbolism and texture to communicate experiences that words sometimes fail to hold.

Her artworks, grounded in these explorations, have been recognized both in Oman and internationally. By transforming everyday objects and cultural rituals into immersive installations, Sarah invites viewers to engage with stories that are intimate, communal, and timeless. Her work continues to travel and be exhibited, fostering conversations across borders about heritage, identity, and the role of art in preserving memory.

I hope my work speaks honestly—to artists, viewers, and communities—about the importance of preserving our stories while allowing them to evolve. To fellow artists, I want to say: your background, your roots, and your questions are powerful. You don’t need to polish away your contradictions. The inside is just as meaningful as the outside. Art can be a space for truth, vulnerability, and continuity—where heritage is not frozen in time, but kept alive through reinterpretation and care.

Through my practice, I aim to create work that feels both intimate and collective—work that invites reflection, honors where we come from, and encourages future generations to look closely, listen deeply, and create fearlessly.
